Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What applications are Dolphin Desalinators designed for?

A. Dolphin Reverse Osmosis Salt Water Desalinators are designed to be suitable for a range of applications including onboard vessels, resorts and remote communities. They are for use with sea water only.

The Dolphin Desalinator Mini Range with production capacities from 30 litres per hour to 5,000 litres per day are purpose built for the marine environment. They are of great benefit onboard a huge range of vessels. Having a sea water desalinator onboard your vessel is economical, saves on storing excess amounts of fresh water and enables you to use fresh water for a greater range of purposes. Fresh water can even be used for boat wash downs!

Knowing you can produce fresh water as required while at sea and in remote locations is a comforting thought.

Q. What is the fresh water production capacity?

A. Fresh water can be used not only for drinking but also for showering, cooking, ice-making, dishwasher, washing machine, cleaning and boat wash down. The average use of fresh water per person per day can be estimated and calculated out. Add this to an estimate of the amount consumed by cleaning and appliances and you will be able to determine the production capacity per day you require from a new desalination system. Generally, a good guide is to allow 200 Litres per person per day.

Dolphin Desalinators Mini Range covers production capacities from 30 litres per hour to 160 litres per hour. The Midi and Maxi ranges cover up to 250,000 litres per day. We can help you determine a unit to suit your required fresh water capacity.

Q. Is it cost effective?

A. Installing a reverse osmosis desalinator is inexpensive when compared with the benefits. Such as having fresh water “on tap”, the money, time and storage space saved by not having to buy bulk water supplies, and the money and time saved on the vessels maintenance and rigging replacement from using fresh water for cleaning the vessel.

Dolphin Desalinators are focused on remaining price competitive without sacrificing quality.

Q. How good is the quality of water produced?

A. Dolphin Reverse Osmosis Salt Water Desalinators produce fresh water for human consumption. Water produced from RO desalinators is compliant with World Health Organisation standards (more info). RO membranes reject most bacterias and viruses. Units are also fitted with pre filtration.

In some areas such as harbours where a polluted water source is suppling the feed to the desalinator further sterilisation of the product water can be required. A UV steriliser or Chlorine Dosing System may be an option. It is also important the desalination system is correctly maintained and fresh water tanks remain sterile.

Q. What water source can I use?

A. Dolphin Reverse Osmosis Salt Water Desalinators are for use on sea water applications. This can include open ocean, rivers, harbours, offshore, etc.

Q. What are the requirements for installing a desalinator on a vessel?

A. A desalinator can be installed anywhere on the vessel ideal for the owner. However there are requirements for feed pumps to be placed below water level and certain fittings are required on the vessel for installation. Such as a thru-hull inlet fitting, sea cock valve, thru-hull reject fitting, electrical wiring, circuit breaker and storage tank connections.

Unit specifications are supplied for each unit. Modular models are also available to enable vessel owners to mount desalinator components into a designated position on the boat if required.

Q. What power supply is required?

A. There are a range of power supply options available. Units are available to suit most applications. More info…

Q. Are the units easy to look after?

A. All models come with a fully comprehensive Installation, Operation and Maintenance manual. The manual is easy to follow and enables owners to easily install and operate their system. Qualified and experienced technicians will be required to complete electrical connections and hull fittings. The manual should be read, understood and followed to ensure system and product water quality remains at its best.

Q. How long does it take for fresh water to begin production?

A. After start up models will start producing fresh water within a few minutes. The time will vary depending on the model.
